The Internet may be thought of as being intimidating to the new user. However, it is not and should not be thought of in that way. On the contrary, the Internet is actually very user friendly, most of the time. At times it may take some patience. The Internet is a very large place. To explain the Internet in words, it is a vast, global network of computer networks connected by everything from standard telephone lines to high-speed fiber-optic links. Think of these networks as a democratization of information, the Internet's strongest organizing principle.
Those of us at The 3rd Door have devoted this page to the new user and to those who would like more information about the Internet. Browse the World Wide Web using Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator/Communicator, send e-mail to someone else on the Internet, download files from ftp (file transfer protocol) sites. Try anything on the Net because you generally can't hurt anything.
The purpose of web browsers or programs such as Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator/Communicator is to help make navigating and browsing the Internet easy. When browsing world wide web pages (what shows up on your screen in Microsoft or Netscape), you will notice some words appear in blue text and are underlined. These are called links. They link to other pages that can be accessed with a click of a mouse button. Its like opening a door to another dimension or world by simply placing your mouse cursor over the link and clicking that link one time. Graphics or icons that appear with blue borders around them are also links.
